Algoma Steel layoffs are the real consequences to Ford’s inaction

QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles released the following statement in response to the effected layoffs at Algoma Steel:

“Nearly a thousand workers lost their livelihoods today. These layoffs will be devastating for the Soo community,” said Stiles. “The Premier knew for months that these job losses were coming, and did nothing to protect these workers, their families, and the people of Sault Ste. Marie. This is Doug Ford’s jobs disaster in effect.

“We need a plan to protect good jobs, keep people working, and a Buy Ontario First strategy that strengthens key sectors like steel. Instead of standing up for these good jobs, the Provincial and Federal government have handed over millions to the employer and the workers need to be at any table where decisions are made that impact their livelihoods.

“New Democrats stand with Algoma Steel workers and their families and are calling on this government to immediately support the workers and their families who are faced with these layoffs, and for a real plan to secure the future of steel in Northern Ontario.”
