Stiles and Bell call out Ford’s failure on homelessness following scathing AMO report

QUEEN’S PARK – Marit Stiles, Leader of the Ontario NDP, released the following statement in response to AMO’s Municipalities Under Pressure report on homelessness.

“This report is a searing indictment of this government’s inaction the homelessness crisis” said Stiles. “Under Ford’s watch, the number of people facing housing instability continues to increase at an alarming rate.”

“Encampments and homelessness in every single community are a stark reminder of this government’s failure. After six years, there is still no real plan to address the critical lack of affordable housing that is forcing so many of our neighbours out in the cold.”

The number of unhoused Ontarians grew by 25% over the past two years, with more than 81,000 people identified as experiencing homelessness in 2024. Without significant intervention, that number is expected to triple by 2035.

“A future where hundreds of thousands of people live without stable housing should be unimaginable in a province as prosperous as ours” added Jessica Bell, the Ontario NDP housing critic. “It’s time we had a government that prioritizes this crucial issue and ensures every Ontarian can afford to have a roof over their heads.”

Ontario NDP is committed to making meaningful investments in mental health care, taking back provincial responsibility for shelters and homelessness prevention programs. and building affordable and supportive housing.
